Paige Manning
Paige is a fashion student currently studying at York and she has been asked by the editor of a fashion magazine in America to have some fashion shots done to show her style. The editor is a fan of her work and follows her blog. Paige will be doing her degree in Fashion specialising in Corsetry in September. I took these photos in a very cold, dark, dull park. They were intended to show spring, I think they show a British spring time well.
Big Issue North
I have had the opportunity to have one of my photos published in the Big Issue North. The Northern Challenge was issued to OCA students living in the North of England. We had one week to take photos of 'topical issues'. I chose University Fees, the Alternative Vote and a Crucifix – because it was Easter week.
On the news that week Leeds Metropolitan University board of Governors had agreed to set fees at £8500 for full time graduates. All the universities in my area were announcing their fees and I just thought it was wrong that Leeds Met could charge nearly the same price as better Universities. I had the idea of a cheap price tag with all the different fees on for each University. I was going to go to Huddersfield and put a tag of £7500 and then York etc. But I was happy with just the Leeds Met one. I went early one Saturday morning and I too lots of different shots. Just before I was about to leave I took the one they used in the Big Issue. I think it gets the message across.
Again that week an electrician working for Wakefield District Housing faced the sack for displaying a palm cross on his company van dashboard. I went to Otley Chevin where they erect this enormous crucifix every Easter. A palm crucifix is not as tacky or offensive as fluffy dice!
I also have been studying light, so I went out at night. I really like the movement in these images.
I was parked in a side road and I saw this magazine blowing in the wind. I set my tripod and shot loads of images of this moving object.
I really like street lighting. Strange I know, but I like the colour and the movement captured here. Vapour discharge lamps are used as street lights and flood lighting.
This is something I am defiantly going to do again. I saw so many interesting things that you just don’t notice in the day light.
Flora
I recently printed all my favorite photographs and pinned them on my studio wall. A very good friend came in and stood and looked at my wall and said,
‘You’re a 'still life' person aren’t you.’
‘Am I?’
As I stood back and looked at all my images I saw they were all of objects except about four which were portraits. I never saw that in my work before but I am drawn to still life and in particular, the detail of flora.
I really love these photo's Penny. A real variety of techniques. Thanks for sharing them.
